WHAT IS AN IRC?

An International Reply Coupon can be purchased at any Post Office in any country in the world. This is agreed through the Universal Postal Union. You can then send the IRC to someone in another country who can cash it in at a Post Office there for a postage stamp covering the minimum rate for an Airmail letter (unregistered).

In the UK an IRC will purchase a 45 pence stamp which enables a letter up to 10 grammes to be airmailed abroad. That's not much more than a couple of sheets of A4-size paper. So if your want a reply with more than this, better send two or more IRCs! An IRC costs 60 pence in the UK (July 1996) and (I believe) $1.05 in the USA.

It has been reported that some post offices in the USA claim not to have IRCs. Persistence usually pays however. You should remind the counter staff that all post offices world wide must provide International Reply Coupons under the international treaty obligations entered into by their governments under the Universal Postal Union.
